Classic Wooden Toys
Founded in the late 1800s by a basket maker called Ivar Bengtsson, BRIO (short for Bröderna Ivarsson Osby) is an experienced Swedish-born manufacturer of children’s wooden toys. They have since grown into a global company, and their products aim to stimulate young minds around the world in a safe and nurturing play environment.
Of all their products, BRIO is perhaps best known for its toy trains, which have been sold in Europe since the ‘50s. As with all their other toys, the trains are safe for use by children and predominantly have no motors. Instead, they opt to incorporate magnets — though modern designs have leaned towards remote control, battery, and ‘intelligent track’ engines. Famously, BRIO has licensed Thomas The Tank Engine trains outside of the US and Theodore Tugboat toys (up until 2000).
In addition to their range of trains, the company allows children to build more complex constructions, such as with their BRIO-Mech kits — which utilise holed wooden slats that can be connected together using plastic fasteners.
Due to their immense contribution to the toy industry, BRIO started their own musem in 1984: the BRIO Lekoseum (‘leka’ meaning ‘to play’ in Swedish). Situated in Osby, this museum features the company’s many products as well as toys created by their competitors, including Märklin and Barbie. Generously, children are allowed to play with the toys.
